Background:
My wife had asked me to turn an extra large closet in the master bedroom into a "reading room" and then went back to Texas for 2 months to prep the house in Texas for sale. After brainstorming and doing some research about reading rooms, I decided a Harry Potter theme would be appropriate. I casual asked her on a nightly phone call if her Harry Potter house was Griffindor, and she responded "No, I'm a Hufflepuff girl!" That would be the only clue she would have in those 2 months that I was up to something special and she didn't figure it out until the day she arrived in New York and saw a bookcase in the bedroom where a door had previously been...
This is the space I started with, a 14' by 4.5' oversize closet, and the previous owner was a bit of a clothing hoarder.

What a wiring mess!
Widening existing lighting holes, I created a new tool out of 2 tools so the cut would remain perfectly round.
Perfect circle cut!
Door frame trim removed
New flooring installed!
Walls primed so the drywall mud would stick.
Texture gun I use to apply drywall mud to walls and then I knock it down with a 24' spatula!
Paint supplies for master bedroom and Hufflepuff! All paint used is Benjamin Moore Regal Select brand.
Removing the ceiling plastic.
2 coats of "Gold Mine" paint on the wall!

A new attic door, wood instead of drywall.
Found a super cute Badger image I purchased on Etsy.
I had the image made into a Metal Displate poster because attic doors get dirty over time, and metal is easy to clean!
My basement painting labratory!
Coats of primer on the attic door and room doors.
Test look at the Displate on the now yellow attic door.
Construction adhesive, weights, and curing for 3 days should ensure the poster never comes off the wood.
Final attic door ready to be mounted!
Freight truck arrives with the Murphy Door!
Hauled the door upstairs!
Test fit of the Murphy Door!
Test fit of the book to be used to open the door.
Adding door trim and a topper that matches the style of the rest of the doors in the house.
Had to do trim for the inside and top as well!
Ready to caulk and fill the holes left by the mounting nails.
Door sent to basement for painting, time to sand frame and prep for painting.
Paint applied to the Murphy Door Shelves.
Inside of Murphy Door painted and now taped. I used 3d printed triangles attached to the side to keep the front off the ground when painting the backside.
Backside caulked, sanded and prepped for paint.
Benjamin Moore Advance trim paint in a Black Onyx color applied!
Now it is time to paint the trim on the inside of the room. All trim in the house is White Dove, when you step into this room all trim is Black Onyx to help sell the room is in another world.
Door trim first coat over the primer. Painting with Black takes a surprising number of coats to make the primer not show through.
Prepping for ceiling paint, need to protect the finished walls!

First coat of Benjamin Moore Regal Select Black Onyx in a matte finish is on!
Take the plastic down 15 minutes after 2nd coat of paint is applied!
The lines came out super crisp! The secret is painting the top of your tape with the color that has been applied, in this case yellow. This creates a tight seal so the black won't bleed through.
Outsourcing delivered all of the hardware!
Light switch cover I found on Etsy.

Black electrical outlets and black air return duct installed. Ran the dehumidifier for a few days to help the paint cure.
Trim pass on the baseboard shoe molding.
Messing with the lighting color temperature because as in games, lightning has a huge impact on the space!
Part of the Hufflepuff theme is vines and plants. I used plastic ivy vines as a crown molding for the room.
Hours before I had to get on a plane to return to Texas and move my wife and cats to New York I was adding the vines and flowers so the room would be when my wife arrived.
Post vines installed, the last thing was to mount the door and head to the airport. Nothing like working up to the very last minute, just like prepping for a game launch...
SHIP IT!!
The room with the construction stage complete. The next steps will be to prop the room out with furniture and shelves, and other Hufflepuff specific items and books!
After ordering a fuzzy chase lounge chair as pictured, I brainstormed with AI on what a more propped out version of the room could look like. While I won't be replicating this, it has given me some ideas for the first round of grey boxing.
