Game Design Pipeline, In Real Life
I am renovating a home in Western New York that was previously occupied by my elderly parents in their final decades, which unfortunately hadn't been maintained very well. When I started this process in late 2025, I had no knowledge of what went into home renovation; from designing rooms, prepping, texturing, painting walls to all the various tools and materials needed. However, YouTube University! and Gemini are great instructors whenever I need help, and as I discovered, world building in either a video game engine or the real-world, the real-world build process maps directly to game production pipelines:
Pre-Production: Conceptual vision, floor planning, and 1:1 butcher paper "grey box" prototyping.
Production & Pipeline: Sourcing materials, budgeting, and collaborating with external contract specialists (electrical) for critical systems beyond my skill level (which could lead to fires or other catastrophes), sanding, caulking, applying wall and ceiling texturing, priming, and multi-pass painting.
Iteration & Polish: Trim and door painting, touch ups, electrical outlets and switches, lighting, ceiling fans and room specific custom thematic propping.
